I Remember...

Harry was truly an amazing individual. He enjoyed the students who rode on his bus and made them always feel special. The impact he had on my daughters throughout their experience at Cranbrook cannot be overstated. They missed him once he retired. Harry was one of the most generous people I have ever had the the pleasure to meet and I will always remember his kindness and generousity.

I remember Harry spending the afternoons or evenings at our house on the lake. What a surprise and delight it was to find out he used to live in a nearby neighborhood! Music, laughter, and fun conversations made us family friends for decades.

Harry was pure joy! He was kind and considerate to everyone and a conscientious worker for any job he undertook. He was no ordinary bus driver at Cranbrook Schools. He knew and cared for the students and the students equally loved and admired him. I had the honor of mentoring him when he became the Kingswood Day Camp Director as it was a position I had formerly held. He appreciated my advice and I was impressed with his ideas and spin of creativity. He hired my daughter, Amelia, as the dance instructor that summer and she not only enjoyed the campers, but also Harry's professionalism. Carolyn was a magical partner for him. I encourage her to preserve the fond memories of her wonderful husband and am sending countless big hugs to her!

Harry lifted the Cranbrook experience for me as a faculty program director and for both of my children, as students. I could always count on Harry to happily get the job done - whether driving 20 visiting Chinese students to the airport in a blizzard or doing countless stops on our chaotic but important Down Woodward tours. Most importantly, for Liliana and Teddy, as for thousands of other Cranbrook kids, Harry was a warm, loving and kind presence during thier countless shuttles between campuses. Sending our friend Carolyn love and support in this difficult time. Harry was truly a legend.

My favorite memory will always be the day he brought me into the camp he was doing counseling for. He asked me to teach the kids how to play bocce ball because he was so fascinated in the game itself knowing I played. All the kids of course knew him as Harry, but after the camp opening assembly, Uncle Jimmy asked me what we called him in the family and of course I said Uncle Jimmy! After that he would always tell me how all the camp kids called him Uncle Jimmy and on the bus even.

My husband, three daughters, our dogs and myself looked forward to seeing Harry every morning and afternoon. Sometimes he'd be ready to leave for the day but if he saw us coming he'd get back out of the car and grab his stop sign to make sure we crossed safely. He always had a smile on his face and a different hat for everyday. The commute to Gill Elementary will never be the same. The Amen-Ra family

Hearing about Harry's death felt like a huge punch in the gut and the heart. And I know that it is so important that we come together and grieve and honor Harry and reminisce and celebrate Harry's incredible life, and our time with him. I met Harry many years ago,  after attending a workshop and making friends with a whole group of great people, who Harry and Carolyn had already known for quite a while. I attended many gatherings with these people, and many were at Harry and Carolyns house, where I always felt very comfortable and welcomed.  And they were always very warm and gracious and delightful to be around. There was always a smile of delight and a warm hug and good conversation and humor whenever we met and spent time together.  And then there was the bonus of Harry's music. He was such a generous musical advocate, and encouraged other musicians and singers to participate and play their music or sing along or perform solo. Harry was always so quick-witted and joyful. And whenever I needed to talk, he was always there to listen. To our beloved friend Harry Miller: We wish you much guarding and guidance as you go through your passages. You will always be in our hearts. We look forward to seeing you soon in our dreams, and eventually in the afterlife.

I had the privilege of spending four years rowing in high school, and Harry was my coach. Beyond his coaching role, he also drove us to every practice and competition. These trips can take hours some times, particularly during the out-of-state competitions. Harry is a source of joy and positivity for the team. In the midst of intense practices and fierce competitions, I always draw from his upbeat spirit. One of my fondest memories of Harry was his fall fundraising concert for the team. It was a time of great fun and team bonding, bringing our team closer together with every song. Rest in peace, Harry! You'll be missed.

Cranbrook Rowing likely would not exist without Harry. He offered amazing support to me when I took over the program in the Fall of 1999. Harry watched my toddler, Will, while I coached on the water. He helped the team get to its first races the following spring. When I stepped down as head coach in 2002, Harry stayed on and helped a series of head coaches build the program as a coach, bus driver, cheerleader, and fundraiser (with the concerts). Harry was kind and caring to everyone he encountered.
