Nourey 'Norm' Ahmed

November 17, 1946 - April 9, 2025

Nourey Jengiz Ahmed passed away on April 9, 2025, at the age of 78. Norm leaves behind his wife and devoted caregiver, Hulya, who stood by him through his illness and treatment. He was a loving and proud father of his son, Sean (Siggy), and a kind and generous “Dede” to his two grandchildren, Kai and Kira. He also leaves behind his two brothers, Mustafa (Tulin) and Ferid (Leyla), and his many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Born in Detroit and a graduate of Pershing High School, Norm was known for his kindness and generosity. He treasured his grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them with hugs and gifts. His love for cooking made Thanksgiving into the family’s most beloved holiday, headlined by his stuffing with apricots. He was known to send family and friends with stacks of containers filled with his signature brisket or biscotti.

He was passionate about gardening, real estate, and collectibles. He had a photographic memory for creators, art movements, and time periods. He enjoyed sharing childhood memories of Detroit’s golden age and was a proud patron of the arts. Chicago, too, became a second hometown to him through his visits to Sean and his family. He loved the University of Chicago campus—especially the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures—and Lincoln Park. In his youth, he traveled to Turkey during summers and flew to Paris on the Concord.

Norm built true friendships with his many clients as a longtime salon owner and hairdresser, with his career ending only last year after nearly six decades. These relationships were built, week by week, over decades. He went above and beyond to make people feel comfortable in his chair and often opened his doors during off-hours to accommodate others. He spoke glowingly about his family to these friends, and they became family themselves.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 13 at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills. Visitation will continue on Monday, April 14, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery, Troy.

Norm lived for many years with a rare illness known as achalasia. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his honor to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, to the arts (including his favorites, the Detroit Opera House and the Detroit Institute of Arts), or to PBS public television.

May the memory of his kindness, generosity, and smile be a blessing.
