David L. Gilkes, age 83 of Farmington, passed away on April 1, 2025. David was born on March 26, 1942, in London, Ontario, Canada, to Ross and Dorothy Gilkes. David’s career began in banking, where he worked for NBD, which later became Chase Bank, until his retirement in 1999. It was at the bank that he met Margaret, the love of his life. After just three dates, David proposed, and the couple married shortly afterward. Together, they raised two daughters, Alison and Kathleen, and created a home full of love and lasting memories. After retiring, David found fulfillment in helping others, driving seniors to various events and doctor appointments. His selfless nature was evident in all that he did. David was deeply involved in the community, particularly with The Farmington Players. A member since 1989, he served as President and played a key role in the organization’s financial operations and the construction of their new building. He and Margaret attended countless performances, showing their dedicated support for the arts and local theater. David also looked forward to his annual deer hunting trips with friends, a tradition he cherished for over 50 years. While he enjoyed the hunt, his family believes it was the camaraderie and delicious meals shared with friends that he cherished most. Above all, David treasured his family. He loved family nights filled with laughter, particularly playing card games, with “Screw Your Neighbor” being a favorite. As a proud Papa, David was always present to support his grandchildren at their hockey games, swim meets, softball matches, and dance recitals. He never missed an opportunity to attend any of their theatrical or music performances, always cheering them on with enthusiasm. Every week, after dialysis, he would visit his granddaughter Alexis at Maria’s Bakery, where they shared time together while picking up cookies, bread, and coleslaw. David also looked forward to family trips to Harbor Springs, affectionately called “Papa’s Vacation,” where he found peace and created more treasured memories with his family. He will be deeply missed by his family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. David was the beloved husband of Margaret for 51 years. Loving father of Alison Fayz and Kathleen Bigwood. Proud Papa of Alexis and Madelyn Fayz, survived by their father, Stephen; and Matthew, Sarah, and Emily Bigwood. Dearest brother of the late Diane Robinson. Cherished uncle of Rob (Tara) and Christie Robinson and great uncle of Jack and Zoey Robinson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews from Margaret’s side of the family. Visitation for David will be held Monday, April 7th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, April 8th, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
