Delphine Mentley Chendes, age 90, passed away January 2, 2025. She was born April 14, 1934, to Louis and Bernice Mentley.

Graduating from Dominican High School, Delphine went on to attend the University of Detroit where she was president of the Alpha Omega Sorority, completing her bachelor’s with honors. Later, she attended Oakland University and obtained her master’s degree in education. Delphine dedicated many years to her career as an educator primarily teaching 1st and 4th grades and was the proud recipient of the “Teacher of the Year” award.

Delphine’s energy was contagious. She was in numerous golf and bowling leagues, earning her “200 club” pin for bowling. Delphine loved her lake house as a favorite place to enjoy the pontoon, her dear grandchildren, playing euchre and antique shopping. As a lakeside resident and an avid educator, an empty aquarium was unheard of, for there was something to be found to learn about.

Touching so many lives, Delphine’s humor, determination, and devotion to those she loved the most, will truly be missed beyond measure.

Delphine was the loving mother of Dawn Marie (Kevin) McCann. Cherished grandmother of Megan (Ryan) Matson, James (Carlie) McCann, and Mitchell McCann. Dear sister to the late Louis K. Mentley and aunt to Michelle (Larry) Stone.

A Funeral Mass for Delphine will be held on Friday, January 17th, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at St. William Parish, 531 Common St., Walled Lake 48390
