Joan M. Hoffman

July 9, 1924 - July 15, 2024

Joan M. Hoffman, age 100 of Farmington Hills, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 9, 1924 to Joseph and Mary Rytel.

Truly a life well lived, Joan took every opportunity to appreciate her many days on earth. From her younger years speed skating on ice, to her later years as an awesome bowler, she loved to remain active. Before her marriage to husband John, a WWII Marine Veteran, she especially looked forward to attending USO dances. Raising seven children, there was rarely a dull moment. While taking care of the home, there was always something baking in the oven, along with endless loads of laundry to do; with much of that clothing being hand sewn. Joan was an excellent knitter and seamstress, even making her only daughter’s wedding dress.

Independent well into her late 90’s, Joan continued her good sense of humor and love of life. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and bird watcher, with a special affinity for cardinals. And like any true Michigander, she enjoyed her trips to Traverse City. Most of all, Joan loved her dear family and was always supportive in all their endeavors. Continuing on with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she cherished the time spent with them and all the wonderful memories made.

As part of the “Greatest Generation”, Joan truly made her world, and the world around her, a better place. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Joan was the beloved wife of the late John. Loving mother of Paul (Jan), Diane (John) Rauch, Mark (Debi), Jim, Richard (Frances), John (Val) and Joe (Sondra). Proud grandmother of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear sister of Maryann Knittel and Betty Bruce.

Joan will lie in state on Tuesday, July 23rd, at 10:15 a.m., until the time of her Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 21300 Farmington Rd., Farmington. Following the Mass, all are welcome to continue to celebrate Joan’s life with a luncheon in her honor to be held in St. Gerald's parish social hall. Joan will be laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Memorial donations in Joan’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
