Except from our 2015 Nomination for German American of the Year The Board of Directors of the Swiss Society unanimously votes to nominate Michael Roesch for the honor of German American of the Year 2015. Despite battling serious health challenges, Michael serves on the Swiss Society Board, GACC, and is our representative at GACC. Michael participates in all the meetings and always volunteers for assignments. These include helping at the Deutsche Tag and our Swiss Society events. At our events, Michael works to prepare the Fondue, set up our National Day Picnic, and tends to the grill. Despite fatigue due to his health challenges, Michael and Ursula participate in many German Swiss cultural events. For example, we had a Swiss Artist Day at the DIA, attended the Geneva Ballet, and a Swiss Artist Exhibit at the MSU Museum in Lansing. Michael worked for Lufthansa for many years and is very active in the Lufthansa retiree community. Michael and Ursula help to maintain our friendships with German and Swiss members who moved to Florida. Michael is also a valued member of the Farmington Hills community. He visits and delivers meals to people in need twice a week through the Meals on Wheels program. He also volunteers with the Farmington Hills Police to enforce handicap parking rules, helping to ensure that the valuable and limited spaces are available for drivers who need them. We have all been awestruck by Michal's persistence and positive attitude in dealing with his health challenges. To me personally, this represents the best of German and Swiss culture: Resilience, our ability as a culture to adapt, overcome obstacles, and to keep going through difficult times. Supported unanimously by the Board of the Swiss Society, June 15, 2015. Respectfully submitted by Urs Bockli, President, DSS

Urs Bockli

Spent many long hours in Germany, Italy, and the USA with Mike and the group from GM. Mike was always a gentleman and acted like a true professional. Best time with the group-all led by Mike- was at Octoberfest in the Lufthansa tent. Mike also served with me during our years in the World Trade Club Of Detroit. May he rest in peace for he has earned it.

Mike McCarthy

Mike served with me on the World Trade Club of Detroit CC in the early 90's, representing Lufthansa. He was always very friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. I enjoyed working with him. Also played golf with him in the F.H. Golf League, and Marshaling at the Ford TPC golf tournaments. Always a Gentleman and Mr. Nice Guy.
